This past weekend we played "Nevermind Portland", a show celebrating 20 years since the release of Nirvana's 'Nevermind'. The plan was to have 12 bands each covering a song off the record, but after they ended up with more bands than tracks on the record, some of us had to look towards 'Bleach' or 'In Utero' for an available song (we settled on "Very Ape"). In anticipation of the night's events, and not having to bring really any of our equipment to the show, we decided it best to take a cab. Why drive when you can be driven? We should be the poster boys for responsible behavior.....Anyways, the show was great, and thanks to Mark Curdo for getting us on the bill.
The next day we played a show at the Dover Brickhouse in New Hampshire with Steiner Street, Truth of My Youth, Yale, MA, Worried Well and Penny Royalty. Steiner Street killed it as usual. I'm super excited to hear their new record. The thing I like the most about these guys is the fact that being in their early 20's hasn't stopped them from finding and loving bands that were part of a different generation. In other words, you don't expect to see any new bands these days covering something off "Your Favorite Weapon". But they did. And it made my night.
Next on the list of unexpected awesomeness was Yale, MA: a band from Boston that had the kind of frenetic energy you don't find in most acts. They reminded me of Challenger and Piebald, amongst others. They've got a new 7" on the way but you can tide yourself over with a couple of their songs here: http://yalemassachusetts.bandcamp.com/. Check out their live show if you really want to be blown away.
And in press news, the new issue of Dispatch Magazine features an article on the band and more specifically a cover photo of Peter Vachon(!), something he won't live down for quite awhile. In all seriousness, Sam Pfeifle did an awesome write-up and Tom Couture took some amazing photos. The shot of the four of us sitting is on top of Port City Music Hall. It was a bit terrifying sitting on the edge of the building, but being heckled by every passing drunk/bum/maniac was worth the risk. Andre was a true champ for the bar photos as well. There were multiple takes of the 'shot-taking' photos and by the end of it all there may or may not have been a wrestling competition....
That's it for now. More shows soon, the next of which being October 20th at Empire in Portland.
Oh and if you see Pete in town, PLEASE ask for his autograph. My request is still pending.
